Energy Supply Solutions

  • DTE Energy is partnering with the U.S. DOE, the State of Michigan, and the City of Southfield to develop, build, and operate a pilot project that will create hydrogen gas from tap water and use that gas in stationary fuel cell generators and to refuel fuel cell vehicles. DTE Energy’s Hydrogen Technology Park, a $3 million, five-year pilot project, will be capable of delivering about 100,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

  • DTE Biomass Energy operates 29 landfill gas recovery projects at sites across the United States. Methane recovered from these projects is converted into pipeline-quality gas, steam, or electricity. DTE Biomass landfill projects have captured the equivalent of more than 25 million metric tons of CO2.

  • DTE Energy’s Detroit Edison plans to launch a voluntary renewable energy program, GreenCurrents, in 2007, pending Michigan PSC approval.

  • DTE Energy is the Michigan industry representative for the Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Program. A northern Michigan site has been selected for a Phase II geologic sequestration demonstration project. CO2, previously released to the atmosphere, will be compressed and injected into a geologic formation 3,000-4,000 feet below the earth’s surface and permanent storage will be verified.   

  • Detroit Edison is also supporting research in the area of CO2 emission capture.  The company is involved in 3 separate projects – SRI oxy-firing study, Notre Dame University ionic fluids research and the EPRI CO2 capture pilot project.

  • Detroit Edison is sponsoring an EPRI project focused on demonstrating the potential to achieve large scale, cost-effective GHG offsets by reducing nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural crop production. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a powerful non-CO2 greenhouse gas. The project is in conjunction with Michigan State University.
