SF6 Reduction

SF₆ —one of the most potent GHGs—is used for insulation and current interruption in electric transmission and distribution equipment.  Exelon’s ComEd and PECO subsidiaries are members of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Sulfur Hexafluoride Emissions Reduction Partnership for Electric Power Systems.  On March 31, 2006, ComEd and PECO set a joint SF6 goal, committing to achieve a leak rate for SF6 of no more than 10% for 2006.  Part of the plan to achieve this goal includes providing additional training to substation personnel on the proper handling of SF6 gas to minimize leaks, as well as reviewing and revising as necessary SF6 handling procedures.
