Interface Transportation
- Interface addresses transportation impacts by reducing packaging materials, manufacturing its products closer to the customer, and transporting information rather than matter, by using electronic and on-line communication
Interface is a charter partner in the EPA’s SmartWay Transport voluntary partnership. SmartWay focuses on reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from ground freight carriers.
In 2006, Interface, Inc. and its consulting logistics firm, Meridian IQ, a fellow SmartWay partner, jointly received an EPA SmartWay Excellence Award. Together they developed a robust model (heavily leveraging the SmartWay Shipper Model) that enables Interface to quantify its GHG footprint from the transportation of product throughout its end-to-end supply chain.
To ensure quantification of its entire transportation footprint, Interface combined the emissions calculated in the Meridian IQ model with a model provided to them by UPS, (another SmartWay partner), to understand the emissions impact of its parcel freight. Parcel freight is used heavily by the FLOR™ residential and InterfaceFABRIC businesses. It is integral to Interface’s delivery of market samples in all businesses.
Interface committed to make its U.S. based light duty fleet 100% SmartWay Certified, effective in 2007 with the addition of the SmartWay Certified Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited into its fleet portfolio. Subaru is offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions associated with the first 60,000 miles of driving for each Subaru Outback that Interface leases. The offsets come from Subaru’s purchase of tree plantings through American Forests.
Interface has partnered with Business for Social Responsibility’s Green Freight Group.
