Focus on Sustainability:

Sustainability is integral to Johnson Controls' vision, values, and objectives.  Johnson Controls has committed to reduce its GHG emissions per dollar of revenue by 30% from 2002 to 2012 as part of the US EPA’s Climate Leaders program.  The company is focusing on improving the eco-efficiency of its supply chain through participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project Supply Chain Leadership Collaborative.  The company also promotes sustainability through its products and services.  For example:

  • Johnson Controls' Building Efficiency business manufactures, installs and services automated building management systems and energy-efficient chillers and HVAC equipment that control energy use in buildings, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.  The energy savings performance contracts in North America have resulted in a GHG reduction of over 11 million metric tons of CO2e since January, 2000.
  • The Automotive Experience business focuses on the light-weighting of vehicles to make them more fuel efficient, designing for improved material recycling and recovery as well as introducing innovative eco-friendly materials such as soy fiber for automotive interiors.
  • The Power Solutions business is developing advanced battery technologies for hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) that will provide higher power and lower weight for Plug-in Hybrid and Full Electric Vehicles over the next years.  Decades ago, Johnson Controls worked with suppliers and customers to make batteries more sustainable by helping to establish the industry’s closed-loop battery recycling program, which results in a recycling rate frequently exceeding 95 percent, one of the highest for any consumer product.

Sustainability Recognition:

Johnson Controls has been recognized for its sustainability leadership by the World Environment Center (2004 Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development), the Carbon Disclosure Project (Leadership Index), the US EPA’s ENERGY STAR program, GEMI and Sustainable Asset Management.  In addition, the company is listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability North America and World Indexes, the FTSE4Good Index Series, 10 global and domestic KLD Indexes (including the Domini 400 Social Index) and the Global Climate 100 Index.
