As shown in Figure 4, emissions from fossil-fuel burning and land-use change were of very similar magnitudes from 1860 until the mid- 1900s. Emissions from the use of fossil fuels have far exceeded emissions from land-use change over the last 50 years, a result of growing reliance on fossil fuels for energy.
