CO<sub>2</sub>Emissions by Fuel Type in the U.S.

Figure 15 illustrates the rise in U.S. CO2 emissions due to fossil-fuel combustion over the last 150 years. Figure 16 shows the sources of fossil-fuel-generated CO2 emissions by fuel type and economic sector.

Note: In addition to releases due to combustion of fossil fuels, CO2 is also released during the manufacture of cement, lime, and soda ash, flaring of natural gas, combustion of wastes, and use of CO2. Emissions from processes other than the combusion of fossil fuels contribute approximately 2 percent of total CO2 emissions in the United States.
