The distribution of energy use across economic sectors in the United States since 1949 is shown in Figure 19. As can be seen, use of energy in the residential and commercial sectors has, since the mid-1980s, been almost as great as industrial energy use, with all three sectors sharing a common rate of increase in recent years.
