In the year 2004, the United States emitted over seven billion metric tons of greenhouse gases (CO2E). Greenhouse gases are emitted by all sectors of the economy, including industry (30% of total), transportation (28%), commercial (17%), residential (17%), and agriculture (8%). In this figure, greenhouse gases from electricity generation have been allocated to the end-use sector. These total emissions have been increasing over time; to see the trend, go to figure 4C [1].
