Statements on Climate Change
"Making greenhouse gas reduction integral to our business processes will allow us to create value in a world where carbon emissions have a cost, as well as fulfilling our responsibilities to society. An important step is working with those who share this vision to develop commercial technologies, methods and products for reducing our own and our customers' greenhouse gas emissions." –CEO, Royal Dutch/Shell
Climate Change Targets
Shell has set a target for 2010 of five percent lower greenhouse (GHG) emissions compared to 1990 levels. It reduced GHG emissions by 35 percent from 1990 levels by 2009.
Shell formerly aimed to meet five-year (2002-2007) energy efficiency targets for global oil products and chemicals business units. For refining, the target was to improve the Refining Energy Index (REI) from 135 in 2002 to 128 by 2007 (or a five percent improvement in the REI). For chemicals, the target was to improve the Chemical Energy Index (CEI) from 100 in 2002 to 92 in 2007 (or an eight percent improvement in the CEI).
